I got my interest in physical comedy from watching old Chaplin films. Comedy is hard enough, but adding the timing to a physical aspect is very awesome & demanding. I love the rush of getting it right in one take. I am working to bring that style back to the big screen.
I started in Ft. Worth, Texas mostly on stage in comic roles, and continue to perform all over. When I moved out to Los Angeles I started hitting the open mics, and went to study at the Second City satellite called Up-Front Comedy at the time. I got to study with some of the great Second City Alum there like Ryan Styles, Jane Morris, Chris Barnes, Jeff Michalski, Fred Kaz, and Mark Beltzer. I also studied with other famous Improv coaches in other places like the legendary Del Close & Keith Johnstone; also Rick Batalla, Stephan Haves, Matt Walker, Russell Fear, Stan Wells and Julie Larson to name a few.
I am more of a sketch kind of guy than a stand-up, but have headlined at the Comedy Store as a stand-up. Though I did enjoy the honor of getting to perform on the Comedy Store main stage as a sketch performer a little more (it is a lot rarer).
In the past I have made a big stand for producing comedy in Los Angeles. Now with my film work rather steady I do not produce much comedy anymore. I started out as one of the work trades at Up Front Comedy in Santa Monica. I helped put up shows in many capacities; lights, stage manager, bartender, etc. While studying there, I formed an Improv troupe called “Loco-Motive”. We mostly stayed at Up Front, but found our way to a few other venues. Shortly after that started up, I was asked to join the cast of “Butt Pirates of the Caribbean,” which ended up running 3.5 years, and won many things including beating out Rent & Ragtime for the Ovation Award in 1998 (not absolutely sure about the year, but you can look it up). It was an original comedy musical that played all over. The Pirates even got so popular we were being flown up to San Francisco on weekends to perform at Josie’s Cabaret & Juice Joint, after we won the San Francisco Fringe Festival.
About three or so months into Butt Pirates, I hooked up with a sketch comedy troupe. I started helping out with tech, supplying some scripts if they liked the ideas, or helping some of the writers punch up things. Before I knew it I was also producing and then directing for the troupe, called “ACTUAL SIZE!”. We spanned over a period of about 7.5 years total, with a few variations. We were most pleased to get to perform main stage at the world famous Comedy Store in Hollywood, as well as a few comedy festivals.
During that time, I was one of the original Co-Founders of the Hollywood Ha Ha Festival (H2F) and their famed Uncle Clyde’s Comedy Contest (I was the live Uncle Clyde if you ever saw the old show at in North Hollywood.) I am no longer with the company, but please support them, as they are great people with a vision that is very similar to my personal beliefs and goals.
I have tried to maintain some comic performing even during films, to stay sharp. Being that my goal is to be the next Buster Keaton or Chaplin, I feel it is really necessary to stay sharp on all levels. I have been doing some good work at Sacred Fools Theatre in Los Angeles. The Fools have a few really great one-off shows that I have taken advantage of. I have directed and performed for “Fast & Loose” where you put together an original full one act based on suggestions, in 24 hrs; and also “10-Tops” and “Crime Scene” in the past. It is a way to stay fresh and get to work with many great performers in a professional space.
I am currently writing a book based on all my improv training that is deeply rooted in philosophy.
With my stage time less frequent, I have started making fun short films. They are a different style than my stage act, and I like the longevity of films.
